Restaurants

‘Few places in the Mediterranean have accomplished such a thorough-going image overhaul. Over 20 years our association of Mallorca with the worst kind of British grockle, washing back fish and chips with pints of sweet sangria, has gradually given way to a realisation that this is one of the world’s most appetising destinations – not just for its stunning landscapes and idiosyncratic local culture, but for the variety and vaulting ambition of its culinary scene.’

This is a quote fromThe British fashion and lifestyle GQ magazine which also includes a ‘top 8’ of restaurants on Mallorca. Check it out.

There is an abundance of restaurants in Mallorca. More than 2000 to chose from. But where do yo go? How do you avoid the tourist traps?

Here are a few websites that will help you make the right choices:

Sky Blue, for example is a good site for wining and dining

Elephant 10 is a German site that claims to be the best and most independent ‘best of’ site on Mallorca. It has a list of the 300 best restaurants on Mallorca. Try it when you are looking for a restaurant.

Another German site is mallorcarestaurants.net

Mallorca Geht Aus is a magazine and publishes every year a list of the best restaurants in various categories. Very useful. the latest copy is available in the Finca.

And here is a short-list of some of the better (and generally more expensive) ones:

Sa Llotja

Restaurant Sa Llotja
Sa Llotja is a new restaurant in Porto Colom which is rapidly becoming very popular.

Previously the home of the harbour master, the space has been completely renovated and modernised by a Mallorcan architect and now provides a light, airy and minimalist setting with gorgeous, sweeping views of the yachts and the Harbour of Porto Colom. Add to that the fresh, tasty seasonal cuisine that is offered here, and it´s no wonder that diners cannot resist coming back more than once for this idyllic Mediterranean experience.

restaurante colon

Restaurant Colon

Zaranda

Zaranda Located in the 5-star Castell Son Cloret hotel in Es Capdella.  Aged 27, Fernando Pérez Arellano first opened his restaurant Zaranda in Madrid, gaining a Michelin star soon after in 2006. He relocated Zaranda and his talented young team to Mallorca– attracted by the Balearics’ rich bounty of produce, particularly from the sea. He now has his Michelin star back.

He has a deft touch with seasonal game.  His skills are reflected in masterful dishes such as black poached egg with cuttlefish caviar. Pata Negra ham and Sóller red prawns also offered.

Opend in 2012 and already voted ‘ the revelation of the year’. Situated in a 19th century mallorcan house in Selva in the middle of the island, with an outside terrace overlooking the countryside around it. Its menu changes every day depending on what chef-in Marga Coll buys on the market.
Very reasonable prices. The daily Miceli menu is 35€

Joan Marc

Joan Marc Restaurant

New restaurant (opened in 2011) ocated in Inca in the center of the island. The chef, Joan Marc Garcias acquired his skills’sat the 5-star Son Brull Hotel before. Recently awarded one star in the Michelin guide. The cuisine has both traditional as well as experimental aspects.

The restaurants’ philosphy is ‘simplicity’. All dishes are half portions so customers can compose their own menu.

Reasonable prices.

Santi Taura

Santi Taura Restaurante – Located in Lloseta in the center of the island. Santi Taura, man and restaurant, is quite a phenomenon. A local boy from the small town of Lloseta, in the foothills of the Sierra Tramuntana, he opened his first place in his home town in 2003. Not long afterwards, word got out among the islanders that here was a home-grown chef with a remarkable talent. Taura’s recent inauguration of a brand-new locale, done out in a chic modern style with plenty of treated metal and concrete – you could almost be in Barcelona – has raised his popularity to fever pitch, and the restaurant is booked out for up to six months in advance, a rarity for Spain.

If this isn’t the best restaurant on the island (and it may well be), it is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best value

3/65

Restaurante 3/65 – in the 5-star Son Brull Hotel, a beautifully estored monastary in the foothills of Pollença, in the Nort of Mallorca. Authenticity, Respect, Culture, Tradition and Patrimonium, these are the values of the restaurant. Chef Rafael Perelló practices the new Mallorquan cuisine. He uses mostty local ‘biological’ products.

The great food and great setting comes at a price. The daily three-course degustation menu is 77€, so count on 100€ pp all-in.
